When looking at a map of the United States, it is a bit misleading as far as Maine is concerned. At first glance, a person may assume that the state is a peninsula. However, this is not so. The state borders the province of New Brunswick, Canada on its Northern and Eastern boarder while on the Western border, the states boundary is shared by the state of New Hampshire. Only the south side of the state is bordered by water, partly the Bay of Fundy but primarily the Atlantic Ocean. And although the state is not surrounded by water, it is perhaps the state which is most associated with the ocean and sea harvesting which accounts for over 19 million pounds of consumer salmon and 10 million pound of harvested shellfish. With its association with the shellfish and marine harvesting and farming, one would think that the state animal would be the iconic lobster for which the state is known, but it is not. It is the moose.

Away from the coastline, the state of Maine is filled with a diverse terrain. The landscape consists of over 6,000 lakes and ponds, 3166 islands, and 67+ lighthouses. On the northern half of the state, Appalachian trail meets the highland region (the highest point being Mt. Katahdin at 5,268 feet above sea level). A comparison of the elevations shows that cities such as Van Buren and Fort Fairfield are in the higher elevations ranging from 1000 to 3000 feet or more above sea level while Portland and Milford are no more than 100 feet above sea level at places. Such diversity makes communications, especially those of cellular reception and internet reception, problematic at times.

There are a few factors which play into the inconsistency in cellular and internet reception for the state of Maine. First, the elevations make for natural barriers to a fluent signal, specifically the mountainous areas. Secondly, the fluctuation between the summer and the winter temperatures plays a great deal to the ability for towers to maintain strong signal strength. It has been reported that the average summer is 70 degrees while the average winter is 20 degrees Celsius or lower. While many states do see freezing temperatures, most do not see such extreme differences between the summer and winter as Maine. Finally, the population distribution of the state and the rural areas makes cellular and internet reception limited to certain areas. In more urban areas, the signal will be greater. In the rural areas, it is less apt a person would have access to a strong signal all the time.
