Product Description

SureCall Surge Protector (50 Ohm).

SureCall SCLP/ SCLP50 lightning surge protector/ in-line arrester can be used within any 50 Ohm signal booster system. This lightning arrestor for outside antenna is designed to protect against lightning surges. It is installed between your external antenna and amplifier, but is not directly connected to either.

SureCall's coaxial lightning arrestors act as a signal filter and are designed to pass desired frequencies while suppressing lightning surges. Lightning strike electrical surges are diverted through the protector’s short-circuit to the ground. SC-LP features N-Female connectors on both ends.

In the event that lightning strikes your outdoor antenna, or a large power surge occurs, the device will release a gas discharge element to break the connection. The gas element can be replaced if and when this does happen. A short amount of additional coax cable is required for the installation, and the lightning protector must be grounded to be effective.

If you're thinking about installing your kit in an area mostly afflicted by lightning, get a working lightning surge protector. Sure Call SC LP 50 can to be installed in line and can be grounded. Sure-Call SC-LP/ CM-LP or SC-LP-50/ CM-LP-50 is SureCall lightening protector that includes a gas discharge replacement element and a lifetime warranty. You only need to have the protector inserted to the outer cable for the antenna.

You may need a two feet jumper cable (SC001-02) to use to connect in-line, once it has been grounded or N-male to N-male connector (SC-CN-12) in order to connect antenna pigtail cable with connector to the surge protector. The amplifier and the cable can then be connected on the outside port for the antenna. SC-LP consists of a N-Female to N-Female connector for 50 Ohm cable systems.

This unit goes between outdoor 50 Ohm antenna, and the cable that comes inside the house. It helps only if lightning strikes antenna which is most likely because it juts out the most from most building structures. This surge protector and a grounded wire from it will both minimize damage by blocking and/or deflecting the lightning surge into the ground soil via grounding cable.

Connect the lightning protector to your outside antenna and use the coax cable going down to the booster. You will need 10-12G wire in order to ground the protector. The 10-12 gauge wire (see preceding link to grounding cable) is connected on the lighting protector to a grounding plate or anything metal like metallic water pipe that can help ground it.

Questions & Answers

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • I'm thinking about adding the Surecall fusion4 home, yagi/panel on our 38' fifth wheel. It has self leveling jacks(6) so I don't think the tires will be providing any grounding protection in the event of a lightning strike. The yagi will be installed on an extending pole attached to the rear ladder. Do I need the lightning surge protector and instal a ground wire? Is there an acceptable alternative to the solid copper grounding wire? How long of a grounding rod will be needed to pound into the ground near the rear ladder to be effective? Is this a viable solution for lightning safety? Most of our stays are of 1-6 months per campsite, volunteering at national parks.

If this is going to be installed in an area that is prone to lightning strikes and there is nothing else nearby that is higher than the outside antenna, then yes, you will need a lightning protector as insurance. There's also stranded grounding wire as an alternative to solid. 8+ feet of grounding rod is effective.

  • I'm going to use this on a RG6 coax cable on the roof. I have a ground on the roof which this ground hooks to the lightning rods. Is it okay to use this product outside?

You can use it outside but I would recommend the 75 ohm version for RG6 cable. Here is a link to the correct protector:  https://www.signalbooster.com/products/lightning-surge-protector-75-ohms

Note: For any signal booster to help, outside signal strength must be at least -110 dB or there must be a clear line of sight to a cell tower that is within twenty miles. Before ordering, please check outside signal level in decibels or ensure that you can make and hold a phone call at any good spot outside where you can mount an exterior antenna. Square footage stated in signal booster listings is based on good signal outside. If it is any weaker, the boosted sq. ft. area will be considerably lower, accordingly.

Kevin K. of Anderson, California gave the following review:

Website is easy to use with plain straight forward info but could have had more on testing signal strength to make sure you get a strong enough booster.

Therefore, please note that stated sq. ft. coverage is based on good signal outside. For best results: If outside signal is weak, we suggest choosing the next higher sq. ft. coverage kit. If outside signal is very weak, we suggest choosing the kit with even more higher sq. ft. range bracket. Basically, higher the sq. ft. bracket, the more powerful the signal amplifier with greater Gain as well as higher uplink and downlink output power.

If outside signal is too weak (weaker than -110 dB), submit request for cell coverage solution assessment. Upon receipt of questionnaire, we will perform residential or business site survey. This will help us determine the system that is needed to improve cell coverage. Then, we will create system design using that system such as femtocell, active or hybrid distributed antenna system (DAS), or other carrier feed signal enhancing method available that will work at your signal-challenged location. Finally, we will schedule for installation after equipment and installation service quote has been approved by you, or your company.

For non installation-included kits: Most home / office / building cell signal booster kits only include bracket to mount exterior antenna on outside wall, edge of roof, or existing pipe up to 2 inches in diameter. Mounting pole not included with most kits, unless stated specifically that it is included for free. Therefore, a mounting post must be purchased separately if you will require it to mount exterior antenna.
