Description

Product Description

Lightning Surge Protector or Arrester is for cellular signal amplifier kits and other similar 50 Ohm systems.

Brief summary:

  • Type "N" female connectors.
  • Attenuation is only up to 0.2 dB.
  • Frequency range covered up to 3 GHz.
  • Includes replaceable gas discharge element.

This device protects 50 Ohm mobile signal amplifiers and cell phone signal repeaters from power surges caused by lightning strikes. It is recommended when installing a 50 Ohms signal booster system. It must be placed between outdoor antenna and cell amplifier that needs protection. It must not be directly connected to either but connected with cables on both input and output terminals.

In the event that lightning strikes your exterior antenna causing a lighning current surge, the device will release a gas discharge element to break the connection. The gas element can be replaced. A short amount of additional coax cable is required for the installation, and the lightning protector must be grounded to be effective.

It is recommended that it be installed close to external antenna, in line with the coaxial cable being used. We recommend installing it close to the external antenna so that if you do get a lightning strike, you don't have to replace such a long length of cable. It must be grounded. You may need a two feet jumper cable (SC001-02) to use to connect to the unit once it has been grounded. The signal amplifier and the cable can then be connected on the outside port for the antenna. It has N-Female to N-Female connector for 50 Ohm cable systems.

Note: This is a 50 Ohm impedance surge protector with type N connectors. If your signal booster system has 75 Ohm outside antenna port impedance, you should buy 75 Ohm surge protector with type F connectors, instead.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • How do I install lightning surge protector? Simple instructions will be very helpful.

Here's a link that gives easy instructions with a short video. Hopefully that will clear things for you.    https://www.signalbooster.com/blogs/news/how-to-install-a-lightning-surge-protector

  • Where should I have a lightning resistor when installing your RF Boost Antenna? Or any other protection pieces like that?

A lightning surge protector, properly grounded using 10 or 12 gauge copper wire (the thicker, the better) can be installed between antenna and cable to prevent power surge from toasting the cable followed by electronic devices connected to it. Please know that this is optional precautionary measure, and it only helps in rare event a lightning strikes your antenna.

  • How will this lightning surge protector work? The center connector wire is shorted to ground when checked with an Ohm meter. When installed, the center wire in the coax is grounded, and the signal is lost. Please check if this is normal. If normal, then it will not work on antenna as lightning arrester.

DC signals and RF signals are totally different, thus RF performance with this surge protector is very good. There're two types of lightning surge protectors (both type RF performance is good):

1 Gas tube: Center conductor is open from ground, DC PASS, normally current discharge is 5KA, PIM is very bad.

2 Quarter wave: Center conductor is short from ground, DC BLOCK, normally current discharge is 40KA, PIM is -160dBc.

What we provide you with this purchase is Quarterwave type surge protector. It will work much better than Gas tube type, if antenna does not need DC current.

Since there's no DC current between antenna and cellular amplifier in RF cable within our cellular amplifier systems, our lightning surge protector will work for your application without signal loss.

Note: For any signal booster to help, outside signal strength must be at least -110 dB or there must be a clear line of sight to a cell tower that is within twenty miles. Before ordering, please check outside signal level in decibels or ensure that you can make and hold a phone call at any good spot outside where you can mount an exterior antenna. Square footage stated in signal booster listings is based on good signal outside. If it is any weaker, the boosted sq. ft. area will be considerably lower, accordingly.

Kevin K. of Anderson, California gave the following review:

Website is easy to use with plain straight forward info but could have had more on testing signal strength to make sure you get a strong enough booster.

Therefore, please note that stated sq. ft. coverage is based on good signal outside. For best results: If outside signal is weak, we suggest choosing the next higher sq. ft. coverage kit. If outside signal is very weak, we suggest choosing the kit with even more higher sq. ft. range bracket. Basically, higher the sq. ft. bracket, the more powerful the signal amplifier with greater Gain as well as higher uplink and downlink output power.

If outside signal is too weak (weaker than -110 dB), submit request for cell coverage solution assessment. Upon receipt of questionnaire, we will perform residential or business site survey. This will help us determine the system that is needed to improve cell coverage. Then, we will create system design using that system such as femtocell, active or hybrid distributed antenna system (DAS), or other carrier feed signal enhancing method available that will work at your signal-challenged location. Finally, we will schedule for installation after equipment and installation service quote has been approved by you, or your company.

For non installation-included kits: Most home / office / building cell signal booster kits only include bracket to mount exterior antenna on outside wall, edge of roof, or existing pipe up to 2 inches in diameter. Mounting pole not included with most kits, unless stated specifically that it is included for free. Therefore, a mounting post must be purchased separately if you will require it to mount exterior antenna.
